What chrome tube is used for

19mm and 25mm round chrome tube is the standard material for retail display and light shopfitting: garment rails, clothing rails, display frames, counter fronts, barrier rails and shelving uprights.

It is used because of how it looks. Chrome plated steel reads as finished and deliberate in a way painted steel does not, and it needs no decoration once it is up.

19mm suits lighter rails and display work where the tube should be visually slim. 25mm carries more weight over a longer span and is the choice for a garment rail that will actually be loaded.

Span is what decides the diameter

The usual failure with display tube is not the material, it is the unsupported length.

A rail bows in the middle under load, and it bows more the longer the span, regardless of what it is made of. Adding an intermediate support in the middle of a long run does more for a rail than stepping up a size, and it is cheaper.

Lengths from 600mm to 1200mm cover most bays. For anything longer, plan the supports before the tube.

Cutting and finishing

Chrome tube cuts with a pipe cutter or a fine tooth blade. Two things follow from the plating.

Cut slowly and support the tube, because a fast cut chips the chrome at the edge and once it has chipped it will not be repaired. And deburr and cap the cut end, since a bare cut end is sharp, it rusts, and it shows.

End caps finish the tube and stop the raw edge being visible or catching on clothing. A 32mm round end cap suits the larger tube; match the cap to the outside diameter rather than the nominal size.

Where chrome is the wrong choice

Chrome plating is a decorative finish over steel, and the steel underneath corrodes once the plating is breached.

So chrome belongs indoors, in dry conditions. Outdoors, in a damp store, in a wash-down area or anywhere it takes knocks that break the surface, it will rust from the scratch outwards and it cannot be touched up.

For those locations use galvanised or stainless steel instead and accept the different look.
