Hoarding or mesh fencing

Hoarding is a solid steel panel, so it screens the site as well as closing it off: nothing is visible from the footpath and nothing blows out through the line. Mesh fencing goes up and comes down faster, but it leaves the site in full view.

Hoarding is the choice where the site fronts a public street, where the work or the materials need to be out of sight, and where the boundary is staying put for the length of the contract rather than moving every week.

Planning the run

Set the access points before counting panels, because every gate takes the place of panels in the line. Work out where people come in on foot and where deliveries and plant come in on wheels, and keep the two separate if the site allows it.

Galvanised steel hoarding panels are supplied in two sizes, so a run can be made up without cutting.

Gates

Pedestrian gates are listed at 2.4m x 2.1m and 2m x 2.1m. The narrower gate suits a side access; the wider one suits the main gate where people are going in and out in numbers at the start and end of a shift.

Vehicle gates are listed at 4m x 2.4m and at 4m x 7m. Size the vehicle gate to the largest thing that has to come through it - the delivery wagon, the excavator on a low loader, the concrete pump - not to the site van. A gate that is too narrow means either taking panels out every time or turning a delivery away. Gates are also listed together in the vehicle and pedestrian gates range.

Why galvanised

Galvanising puts a zinc coating on the steel so the panel resists corrosion outdoors. That matters on a boundary standing through a full contract in British weather, and it matters more on panels that are going to be lifted, stacked and reused across several jobs rather than scrapped at the end of one.
