Types of overall and coverall

Reusable overalls are the everyday option: polyester cotton coveralls and boiler suits that take repeated wear and washing. Disposable coveralls, including polypropylene types, are worn once and thrown away, which suits dusty, dirty or contaminated work and visitors who need cover for a single shift.

After that the choice is set by conditions on site:

  • Hi-vis coveralls for work on or near moving traffic and in poor light, including rail spec orange.
  • Thermal and waterproof coveralls for outdoor work in cold or wet weather.
  • Breathable coveralls where the work is warm or physical.

Fabric and construction

Polyester cotton is the usual reusable fabric: it holds its shape, washes well and is more comfortable over a full shift than a coated fabric. Reinforced stitching at the seams is what decides how long a coverall lasts in practice, so it is worth checking before buying in quantity. Disposable coveralls are light, cheap enough to change often, and keep dust and splashes off clothing underneath.

Where they are used

Overalls and coveralls are bought across traffic management, automotive, construction, retail production, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, utilities and civil engineering. The same garment type rarely covers all of them, so most buyers hold a reusable coverall for daily wear and a box of disposables for dirty or one-off jobs.
