Frequently asked questions
What does the diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right mean?
What does the diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right mean?
It shows the fire exit route changes level and direction at the same point - typically up a flight of stairs and then round to the right - rather than continuing straight ahead.
Should I fit this version or the straight-right arrow at a stairwell?
Should I fit this version or the straight-right arrow at a stairwell?
Use the diagonal up-right version where the route goes up a level and then turns right at the same point. If the route stays on one level and only turns right, fit the straight-right arrow instead.
Does the sign say 'Exit' or 'Fire exit'?
Does the sign say 'Exit' or 'Fire exit'?
This version reads 'Exit' alongside the running-man pictogram and diagonal arrow. It is still produced to BS EN ISO 7010 and suited to NHS estate fire exit routes.
Which size suits a stairwell landing rather than a long corridor?
Which size suits a stairwell landing rather than a long corridor?
300mm x 100mm suits a close viewing distance such as a landing or doorway, 450mm x 150mm covers a typical corridor, and 600mm x 200mm suits larger spaces or longer sightlines.
Can the vinyl composite version be fixed to a handrail rather than a wall?
Can the vinyl composite version be fixed to a handrail rather than a wall?
Yes - vinyl composite adds a horizontal channel or vertical channel fixing across all three sizes, so it can be mounted to a post, bar or handrail as well as a flat wall.
Will the photoluminescent option stay visible if the lighting fails on the stairs?
Will the photoluminescent option stay visible if the lighting fails on the stairs?
Yes, it absorbs ambient light during normal use and releases a visible glow if the power cuts out, which suits stairwells and any area where the route needs to stay marked in an outage.
Is this suitable for an external fire escape stair?
Is this suitable for an external fire escape stair?
Rigid PVC, foam PVC and vinyl composite are all suited to exterior use. Self-adhesive vinyl also works outdoors as long as it's fixed to a smooth, clean, non-porous surface.
