Buying the plate on its own

These are plates without a triangle, for fitting to Q-sign warning triangles you already hold. Buying this way makes sense in two situations: you are replacing a plate that has been damaged or has faded, or you want one set of triangles to cover several jobs by changing the plate rather than carrying a separate complete sign for each.

For a maintenance crew doing a different task each week, that is the difference between a van carrying four triangles and a van carrying fourteen complete signs.

Fitting

The plates are sized to fit a Q-sign fitted with extended legs, and screws are included. Check the legs on your existing triangles before ordering, because a standard-leg frame has no room for a plate beneath the face. The reflective vinyl face is BSI checked and bonded to a PVC backing, so the plate matches the triangle for visibility rather than going dull beside it after a season.

Which plate for which job

  • Distance plates, 200 to 800 yards: staged advance warning. Set out furthest first and work in towards the site.
  • End: closes the run on the far side of the works. Worth keeping two of, because it is the plate most often left behind.
  • Single file traffic and slow single line traffic: used beneath the road narrows triangles where one lane is running.
  • Arrow left and arrow right: direct traffic past the obstruction.
  • Cyclists dismount: where the works narrow or close a cycle route.
  • Activity plates: grass cutting, hedge cutting, tree cutting, gully emptying and surveying, for mobile and short-duration works where the crew moves along the road.

Looking after them

A plate is a consumable. It gets stacked, dragged and leaned on, and a scratched or peeling reflective face stops doing its job long before the plate itself breaks. Check the faces at the same time you check cone and lamp stock, and replace rather than clean an abraded surface, because polishing a damaged retroreflective film does not bring the reflectivity back.
