Buying the face on its own
A sign face is the metal plate without a frame. Replacing the face rather than the whole sign keeps the frame and legs in service, and a stock of faces takes up far less room in the van or the yard than a stock of made-up signs. Everything in this range is 1050 x 750mm and fits the matching 1050 x 750mm temporary metal road sign frame.
Diagram numbers
Temporary signs are identified by a diagram number, and traffic management plans normally call a sign up by that number rather than by its wording. The faces in this size fall into four groups:
- Closures and access: Road Closed (7010), Road Ahead Closed (7010b), Road Ahead Closed Access Only, Access Only (7000b), Temporary Road Surface (7010c) and Ramp Ahead.
- Signal control: Traffic Control Ahead (7010.1), Traffic Under Signal Control with and without arrows (7021), Joining Traffic Not Signal Controlled (7022), When Red Light Shows Wait Here (7011) and 3-Way Control Wait Here Until Green Light Shows.
- Diversions: the 2702 family - Diversion Ahead (2702b), Diversion Arrow Left, Right and Ahead, and Diversion END.
- Site hazards: Caution Site Entrance, Caution Raised Ironworks and No Road Markings (7012).
Signal control jobs usually need more than one face: an advance warning of the control, the stop instruction at the light, and a sign for traffic joining from a side road. Diversions need a left, right or ahead arrow at every turn and an END face where the route rejoins.
