When to choose a metal face at this size
1050 x 450mm is the widest face in the temporary range, and width is what wind acts on. A metal face in a steel frame holds its shape and its position in conditions that will flex a plastic panel or push a lighter sign out of alignment.
That makes this the format for schemes that stay out: a diversion running for weeks, a long-term lane closure, an exposed rural route, or a sign that has to look the same in month three as it did on day one. For a job set out in the morning and lifted at night, the lighter self-standing plastic version is easier on the crew.
The diversion arrow set
The diverted traffic faces come as arrow left, arrow right, and a left and right reversible face. The reversible one is worth holding because a diversion is usually signed in both directions, and it lets one face serve the outbound and return legs.
A point that is easy to miss when ordering: the number of signs a diversion needs is set by the number of decision points along the route, not by the length of the closure. A short closure diverted through a housing estate can need more signs than a long one diverted onto a single parallel road. Count the junctions before counting the metres.
Choosing between SLOW and RAMP
The two non-diversion faces answer different questions. SLOW addresses speed: it is the red and white legend ordering drivers to reduce before they reach works, a site entrance or a stretch where the road is compromised. RAMP addresses the surface: it flags a change in level, whether that is a plated excavation, a temporary asphalt transition or an installed speed ramp.
Schemes usually need SLOW in pairs. Traffic arrives at works from both directions, and a single face covering only the busier approach leaves the other one unsigned. RAMP is more often needed singly, because the level change is normally met from one side.
