FR & ARC Flash Protective Clothing questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between FR and arc flash clothing?

FR (flame retardant) clothing protects against flame and heat, while arc flash clothing additionally protects against the intense thermal energy released during an electrical arc. Arc flash garments carry an ATPV (Arc Thermal Performance Value) rating.

What arc flash rating do I need?

The required ATPV rating depends on the incident energy at the work location, calculated during an arc flash risk assessment. Common requirements range from 4 cal/cm² for PPE Category 1 to 40 cal/cm² for Category 4 tasks.

What standards apply to arc flash PPE in the UK?

Arc flash protective clothing in the UK should meet EN IEC 61482-2, with garments tested to either the Box Test (Method B) or Open Arc Test (Method A) methods. EN ISO 11612 flame resistance certification is also typically required.
