Diamond or bonded abrasive

This category holds both, and the choice is about how much cutting you are doing.

A bonded abrasive wheel is cheap and wears away as it works. It is the right answer for occasional cuts, for a one-off job, and for anyone who does not want capital tied up in consumables.

A diamond blade costs considerably more and lasts many times longer, cuts faster, and does not shrink as it wears, so the depth of cut stays constant. For anyone cutting regularly, the cost per cut is far lower.

The rough rule: below a handful of cuts a month, bonded. Above that, diamond pays for itself quickly.

The parts that connect tool to consumable

A large part of this range is adaptors and arbors, and they are what stop a job before it starts.

  • Chuck adaptors and hex adaptors let a core drill or holesaw fit the machine you actually own.
  • Pilot drills centre a core bit or holesaw so it starts where you marked it rather than wandering across the surface.
  • Extension bars reach through a thick wall or slab where the bit alone is too short.

Check the thread and shank standard when ordering. Core drilling equipment commonly uses UNC threads, and a bit that will not mate with your adaptor is a wasted journey. Buy the adaptor with the bit rather than assuming what is in the van will fit.

Wet or dry

Some products here are for dry cutting, some for wet, and some for either. It matters for two reasons.

Wet cutting cools the blade, extends its life considerably and suppresses dust at source, which is the control that matters most when cutting concrete, stone or brick. Dry cutting is quicker to set up and is often the only option indoors or at height, and it needs on-tool extraction and respiratory protection instead.

Running a blade designed only for wet use dry will overheat and destroy it.

Where to go next

For the sanding formats rather than cutting, see sanding abrasives. For bonded wheels specifically, see abrasive wheels, and for holesaws see hole saws. Water bottles for wet cutting are under dust suppression.

Frequently Asked Questions

What training is needed to use abrasive wheels? +

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and the Abrasive Wheels Regulations require that persons who mount or use abrasive wheels have received adequate training and instruction.

What is the difference between a cutting disc and a grinding wheel? +

Cutting discs are thin (1–3mm) and designed for slicing through materials quickly with minimal material removal. Grinding wheels are thicker and used for removing material, shaping, and surface finishing.

How do I choose the right abrasive grit? +

Lower grit numbers (e.g. 40–80) remove material quickly but leave a rougher finish. Higher grits (e.g. 120–400) produce a finer finish with less material removal. Choose the grit based on the material and the required finish.
