Fixed or swing, and why it matters

Every height restrictor here is one of two kinds, and picking wrong is the most expensive mistake on this page.

Fixed restrictors have a rigid crossbar. Nothing over the height gets through, ever. That is exactly right where the purpose is to keep travellers, fly tippers or oversized vehicles out permanently.

Swing restrictors have a crossbar that can be swung aside by an authorised person. Necessary wherever legitimate high vehicles need access: refuse collection, deliveries, maintenance, and emergency services.

Fitting a fixed barrier to a car park that a fire appliance or a bin lorry needs to enter creates an access problem that somebody eventually solves with an angle grinder. Think through every vehicle that has a reason to be there before specifying fixed.

Lower swing gates

Many of these come with a lower swing gate as well as the height bar, and it does a separate job.

The height bar stops tall vehicles. The lower gate closes the opening entirely, so the site can be shut outside hours. Together they give two levels of control from one structure: open with a height limit during the day, closed at night.

Ladder style barriers add a vertical infill between the crossbar and the head, which makes the restriction far more visible to a driver and stops the bar being missed against a bright sky.

Nudge bars

A nudge bar is a lightweight bar hung in front of the main crossbar at the same height.

It is there so a driver who is too tall touches something harmless first. The nudge bar makes contact and makes a noise, the driver stops, and the vehicle, the load and the barrier all survive. Without one, the first thing the vehicle meets is the structural crossbar.

Sized to the barrier width, from 3m up to 10m. On any barrier a large vehicle might approach at speed, it is worth having.

Signage and approach

A height barrier that is not seen in time achieves nothing except damage.

Sign the restriction on the approach, far enough back for a driver to stop or turn, using the prescribed height restriction sign with the limit in both metric and imperial. Add a warning sign at the barrier itself.

Site the barrier with stopping distance in front of it and somewhere for a turned-away vehicle to go. A barrier immediately inside an entrance leaves an oversized vehicle stuck across the footway while it reverses out.

Widths and fixing

Single leaf barriers cover an opening around 3m. Double leaf and two lane versions cover 6m, with the option of separate control of each lane.

Concrete in is the stronger fixing and the right one for a permanent installation. Bolt down suits an existing slab and a layout that may change. Hot dip galvanised is standard; powder coating to a specified RAL matches a site scheme.
