The face and frame system
This range separates the message from the stand. The frame is a grey painted angle iron A-frame stanchion made in the UK, sized to hold a 600mm wide by 450mm high face in 3mm plastic or aluminium. The face clips into it, and frame clips are stocked as a separate item.
The reason to work this way is cost per message. A crew that closes footways, reroutes pedestrians and signs site entrances needs six or seven different legends but rarely needs more than two or three signs standing at once. Buying frames to the number of signs you put out, and faces to the number of messages you need, is materially cheaper than buying a complete sign for every legend.
Keeping a stock of faces
Faces stack flat, so a full set travels in the space one complete sign would take. A working set for footway and street works usually covers:
- Footpath closed, and footpath closed ahead
- Footway closed
- Crossing not in use
- Pedestrians please use other footpath, to diagram 7018
- Pedestrian arrow left and arrow right, or the reversible face that does both
- No parking, to diagram 7518
The reversible left and right face is the one to buy first. It covers either direction from one plate, which halves the chance of a sign pointing people the wrong way when the works move to the other side of the road.
Materials and life
Zintec is a zinc-coated steel. That coating is why these faces matter more than a painted panel: when an edge gets chipped in handling, the zinc underneath keeps corrosion from creeping under the print, which is how rust normally starts on a painted sign. The reflective film over it is RA1 grade.
Check faces for edge damage and delamination when they come back in rather than when they go out. A face that has lifted at a corner will take water behind the reflective film and fail across the whole panel within a season.
Swapping a face
Frame clips hold the face in the stanchion and are replaced rather than repaired. Carry spares: a lost clip takes a frame out of service just as effectively as a bent leg, and it is the cheapest part in the system.
