What this size is for

600 x 450mm is the pedestrian and site-information size. These are the signs read at walking pace by people on foot, by a driver at a site entrance, or by a cyclist coming to a closure, rather than by traffic at speed. That is why the range runs to closures, diversions on foot, site warnings and parking restrictions rather than to carriageway warnings.

It is also the minimum sign size the street works code of practice sets for a single carriageway with a limit of 30mph or less, which is where most footway works happen.

Footway or footpath, and why the wording matters

The two words are not interchangeable in UK highway law, and using the wrong sign confuses the people you are trying to redirect.

• A footway is the pavement running alongside a carriageway.
• A footpath is a right of way on foot that is not beside a road.

Stock both if you work across street works and open land. The range also carries "ahead" versions of each, which are placed back from the closure so someone can cross before they reach it rather than doubling back.

Reading the colours

Colour tells a reader the type of message before they have read a word, so it is worth keeping consistent across a site.

• Red and white: prohibition and closure. No parking, footpath closed, crossing not in use.
• Yellow and black: caution and information. Site entrance, mud on road, lorries turning, delivery in progress.

Blank faces in both colour pairs are stocked, along with blank frames, so a set can be made up on site or an existing frame refaced.

Routing pedestrians past the works

A closure sign on its own leaves people standing at a barrier. The diagram 7018 family does the routing: arrow left, arrow right, and a reversible arrow that covers both so one sign serves either side of the works. "Pedestrians wait here", "pedestrians forward" and "cyclists dismount and use footway" complete a staged route.

The reversible arrow is the one worth buying first. It halves what the van has to carry and removes the risk of putting out a left arrow where the route goes right.

Custom wording

Where no standard message fits, a custom 600 x 450mm face is applied as bespoke vinyl on the same recycled polypropylene A-frame, in a red face with white text or a yellow face with black text.
