When 750mm is the size you need

Sign size is not a preference. The Safety at Street Works and Road Works code of practice sets a minimum sign size for each type of road, and 750mm is the minimum on every road above a 30mph limit.

• Single carriageway, 30mph or less: 600mm minimum
• Single carriageway, 40mph: 750mm minimum
• Single carriageway, 50mph or more: 750mm minimum
• All-purpose dual carriageway, 40mph or less: 750mm minimum

A triangle is measured along one edge, not across its width. Because 750mm covers everything from a 40mph B road upwards, it is the size most traffic management teams standardise on rather than carrying two sizes in the van.

What a Q-sign actually is

The face and the stand are one moulded unit. The A-frame is made in the UK from fully recycled polypropylene, which matters for two practical reasons: there is nothing to rust when it sits out in the wet for a fortnight, and there is no scrap value, so it is far less likely to walk off an unattended verge than a steel frame.

The frame carries a built-in retractable stand, so it comes out of the van free-standing with nothing to assemble, then folds flat for stacking. A 750mm triangle weighs around 5kg to 6kg, which keeps it a one-person lift.

The standards the signs are built to

The range conforms to BS 8442:2015, Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual, the Red Book 2013 and TSRGD 2016. Between them these cover the manufacture and testing of the sign, the layout it is used in, and the legal status of the face itself.

Keeping a sign standing

Wind, not traffic, is what puts a temporary sign on its back. Ballast weights slot onto the frame and hold it down on exposed verges, bridges and open carriageways. The standard weight is a recycled PVC block at 8kg, sized as a one-person lift, and the blocks stack for transport and fit the whole Q-sign range as well as traditional A-frames. Bases can be embossed with a company name, which cuts losses on a shared site.

Plan on one or two per sign depending on exposure. A sign that has blown over is worse than no sign, because it gives a driver a hazard in the carriageway and gives you nothing.

Blanks and custom faces

Blank frames and blank red or yellow faces are stocked so an existing frame can be refaced rather than replaced, and custom 750mm triangles cover messages that no standard diagram carries. Where the warning needs a distance or an activity added underneath it, use the 750mm triangles with supplementary plates.
