Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a smoke door sign and a fire door sign?
What's the difference between a smoke door sign and a fire door sign?
A smoke door sign specifically instructs people to keep a smoke-control door shut, rather than a general fire-resisting door - it matters most where containing smoke, not just fire, is the priority, such as corridors and stairwells.
Why is the sign blue rather than red?
Why is the sign blue rather than red?
Blue is the standard colour for mandatory signs under UK and EU signage regulations - it tells someone they must do something, in this case keep the door locked, rather than warning of a hazard.
Which size should I choose?
Which size should I choose?
100mm x 100mm suits doors viewed close up, such as internal corridors; 200mm x 200mm is more visible from a distance, such as in a warehouse or car park.
Can this be fixed to a glazed or metal smoke door?
Can this be fixed to a glazed or metal smoke door?
Yes - self-adhesive vinyl suits smooth glazed surfaces, while the 200mm Vinyl Composite option with a channel fixing is designed for metal frames, posts or barriers.
Is the photoluminescent version worth it for a stairwell?
Is the photoluminescent version worth it for a stairwell?
Yes - it charges under normal lighting and stays visible if the power fails, which matters most in stairwells and corridors used during an evacuation.
Does this sign need to be combined with other fire safety signage?
Does this sign need to be combined with other fire safety signage?
It's commonly used alongside fire exit and fire equipment signage, but each smoke door should carry its own Keep Locked Shut instruction rather than relying on nearby signs.
Is this suitable for a hotel or apartment block?
Is this suitable for a hotel or apartment block?
Yes - it's designed for smoke doors in hotels, warehouses, apartment blocks, commercial kitchens and laboratories where compartmentation matters.
