Why a survey spray rather than a line marker
Narrow spray for writing
A tight spray pattern is what lets you put readable characters, arrows and dimensions on the ground instead of a fat unreadable line.

A distinct colour where the others are taken
Colour-coded marking only works while the colours stay distinguishable. Once a scheme has assigned blue, yellow, red and white, green is the next one that nobody mistakes for anything else - it does not read as a warning like red or orange, and it does not blend with the ground the way a grey or brown would. That is why it is in the range: not because green means something universal, but because a scheme with five things to mark needs a fifth colour that is unambiguous.

The spray pattern. Survey spray is narrow, for writing characters, arrows and dimensions that need to be read. Site marker and line marker have a wider pattern for lines and areas. If you are annotating the ground, use this. If you are drawing lines and bays, use those.

The can is designed to be used upside down, with the spray coming out through the cap. That is how you mark the ground at your feet without crouching over every mark.
