On a site, red on the ground gets treated differently from other colours. It stops people. That makes it the colour for anything where the consequence of ignoring the mark is serious - a live service, an unsafe area, an excavation limit that must not be crossed. The spray pattern. Survey spray is narrow, for writing characters, arrows and dimensions that need to be read. Site marker and line marker have a wider pattern for lines and areas. If you are annotating the ground, use this. If you are drawing lines and bays, use those.
