Narrow spray for writing
A tight spray pattern is what lets you put readable characters, arrows and dimensions on the ground instead of a fat unreadable line.
Works upside down
The spray-through cap means the can fires inverted, which is how you mark the ground without bending double all day.
Best contrast on light surfaces
Black shows up clearly against concrete, block paving and light stone - choose a brighter colour for dark tarmac where black marks are harder to read.

Setting out and survey marking is writing, not drawing. A chainage, a depth, an arrow showing which way a service runs - all of it has to be legible to whoever turns up next with a digger. That is what the narrow spray pattern is for, and it is the single thing that separates a survey spray from the cheaper general marking cans. The inverted cap is the other: on a job where you are putting down a hundred marks, not crouching for each one is the difference between an afternoon and a day.

The spray pattern. Survey spray is narrow, for writing characters, arrows and dimensions that need to be read. Site marker and line marker have a wider pattern for lines and areas. If you are annotating the ground, use this. If you are drawing lines and bays, use those.

The can is designed to be used upside down, with the spray coming out through the cap. That is how you mark the ground at your feet without crouching over every mark.

Not as well as a brighter colour. Black has poor contrast against dark tarmac and is best kept for concrete, block paving, stone or other light surfaces. If you need marks that stand out on tarmac, choose one of the brighter colours in this range instead.
