What the water is actually doing

Water in core drilling does three jobs, and only one of them is cooling.

It cools the diamond segments, which is what stops the bond overheating and the segments detaching. It flushes swarf up and out of the annulus, which is what keeps the crown cutting rather than grinding against its own debris. And it suppresses the silica dust that dry drilling puts into the air.

That combination is why wet coring goes through dense structural concrete and reinforcement that would stop a dry bit, and why a wet crown lasts several times longer in that material.

The two thread standards

Wet crowns here come in two fittings and they are not interchangeable without an adaptor.

½" BSP male crown drills cover the small diameters, from around 14mm up, for anchor holes, resin fixings, dowels and rebar tie-ins.

1¼" UNC female is the standard rig thread and covers the larger diameters from around 42mm up, for pipe and duct penetrations.

Check which thread your rig or motor carries before ordering. Thread adaptors between the two are available, and a crown with the wrong fitting is otherwise a paperweight.

Running it properly

Wet coring is normally done from a rig rather than handheld, because the crown has to stay square for the whole depth and a wandering core binds.

Keep the water flowing before the crown touches the work and until after it clears. Watch what comes out: clean water means the flow is too high and the diamonds are not being fed swarf to clear; no return at all means the annulus has packed and the bit is about to seize.

Electricity and water together mean a 110v supply through a transformer, or an RCD, and a plan for where the slurry goes. Slurry sets, so it comes up while it is still wet or it does not come up at all.

For the extension bars and thread adaptors, see wet core drill accessories. For drilling without water, see diamond core drills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between wet and dry diamond core drilling? +

Wet core drilling uses a continuous water supply to cool the diamond bit and suppress dust, making it ideal for hard concrete and reinforced structures. Dry drilling uses vacuum dust extraction and is better suited to brick and block.

What diameters are diamond core drill bits available in? +

Diamond core bits are available from 12mm for cable entries up to 250mm and beyond for larger pipe penetrations and structural cores. The diameter required depends on the pipe or cable being installed.

Can diamond core drills be used on reinforced concrete? +

Yes — diamond-embedded core bits are specifically designed to cut through reinforcing steel bars (rebar) within concrete. Wet drilling is recommended for reinforced applications to maximise bit life.
