Why it works
Why prime at all
Gives the top coat something to hold
It soaks in and binds the surface, so the finish coat keys into sealed concrete rather than into dust.
Grey, so you can see your coverage
A clear primer leaves you guessing which bit you have done. Grey shows the wet edge and the missed patches while you can still fix them.
2-4 hours touch dry
Prime in the morning and the floor is walkable the same day, with the top coat going on after 24 hours.
Not only for concrete
Brick, plaster and screed as well, so the same tin covers the awkward substrates on a refurbishment.
Overview
The coat that decides whether the floor lasts
Floor coatings almost never fail in the film. They fail at the bond, and the usual reason is that a top coat went straight onto a bare, porous or dusty slab that had nothing solid to hold on to. A penetrating primer solves that by soaking into the surface and binding it, so the top coat is keying into a sealed, consistent base rather than into loose concrete dust. It is the cheapest part of the job and the part that decides how long the rest of it lasts.

Frequently asked questions
Do I actually need a primer?
Do I actually need a primer?
On bare, porous, dusty or previously uncoated concrete, yes. That is where floor coatings fail, and they fail at the bond rather than in the paint. On a sound, sealed, previously painted floor in good condition you may not need one.
How much will a tin cover?
How much will a tin cover?
5 to 10 square metres per litre, so 25 to 50 square metres per 5 litre tin. The range is that wide because porosity varies enormously - a tight power-floated slab is at the top of it, an old dusty one at the bottom.
How long before I can put the top coat on?
How long before I can put the top coat on?
It is touch dry in 2 to 4 hours and ready to recoat after 24 hours. Do not rush the recoat - the primer needs to have gone off properly for the top coat to bond to it.
What surfaces will it go on?
What surfaces will it go on?
Concrete and screed primarily, and it also adheres to brick and plaster, which is useful on a refurbishment where the floor is not the only surface being coated.
Why is it grey rather than clear?
Why is it grey rather than clear?
So you can see where you have been. On a grey concrete slab a clear primer is invisible while you are applying it, and missed patches only show up when the top coat fails over them months later.
Can I use it as a finish coat on its own?
Can I use it as a finish coat on its own?
No. It is a penetrating primer, formulated to soak in and bind the surface rather than to wear. It needs a top coat over it.
