Why it works
Clear direction where the route bends
BS EN ISO 7010 compliant
The pictogram meets BS EN ISO 7010, the international standard for safety signage.
Legible along a corridor
The green and white safe-condition colours and bold diagonal arrow stand out above a stairwell doorway or along a corridor.
Fixing to suit the mounting point
Choose self-adhesive, drill-hole, horizontal channel or vertical channel fixing depending on the surface.
Photoluminescent option
Charges under ambient light and stays visible if the power fails, useful for directional escape signage.
Suited to indoor and outdoor mounting
Foam PVC and vinyl composite options withstand exterior stairwells as well as internal corridors.
Overview
NHS Estates Fire Exit Down-Left Arrow Sign - Overview
The NHS Estates Fire Exit Down-Left Arrow Sign carries the standard Fire exit pictogram and a diagonal down-left arrow, developed for healthcare estate wayfinding wherever a fire exit route turns down and to the left, such as a stairwell that bends left or a lower-level exit reached by turning left.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the sign combine Fire exit wording with a diagonal arrow rather than just an arrow on its own?
Why does the sign combine Fire exit wording with a diagonal arrow rather than just an arrow on its own?
The wording and pictogram work together so the sign is understood at a glance and remains clear for anyone who cannot rely on colour or symbol alone, matching the BS EN ISO 7010 approach used across UK fire safety signage.
What is the practical difference between a down-left and a down-right version of this sign?
What is the practical difference between a down-left and a down-right version of this sign?
The arrow direction shows which way the route turns from that point - down-left points towards a stairwell or exit that bends left, so the correct version needs to match the actual layout of the building.
Which of the five materials holds up best on an exposed stairwell or external fire escape?
Which of the five materials holds up best on an exposed stairwell or external fire escape?
Vinyl composite and photoluminescent PVC are both suited to exterior use and channel fixing, so either works well where the sign faces the weather; foam PVC and rigid PVC also cover interior or exterior mounting but without channel fixing.
Can this sign be fixed to a handrail or barrier bar rather than a flat wall?
Can this sign be fixed to a handrail or barrier bar rather than a flat wall?
Yes - the vinyl composite version takes a horizontal or vertical channel fixing at all three sizes, so it mounts to a post, bar or handrail as well as a wall.
Does fitting the self-adhesive version need any tools?
Does fitting the self-adhesive version need any tools?
No - it uses a high-tack adhesive backing, so it presses onto a smooth, clean, non-porous surface without drilling.
How does the photoluminescent option work without a power supply?
How does the photoluminescent option work without a power supply?
It absorbs ambient light during normal use and releases it as a visible glow if the lighting fails, so it keeps marking the route without needing its own power source.
Is the BS EN ISO 7010 pictogram recognised outside NHS buildings?
Is the BS EN ISO 7010 pictogram recognised outside NHS buildings?
Yes - it is produced to the international pictogram standard, so it reads the same way in any building, though this listing is set up for NHS estate wayfinding.
