Why it works
Why a survey spray rather than a line marker
Narrow spray for writing
A tight spray pattern is what lets you put readable characters, arrows and dimensions on the ground instead of a fat unreadable line.
Works upside down
The spray-through cap means the can fires inverted, which is how you mark the ground without bending double all day.
Specified RAL
RAL 5015 is a stated colour, which matters when marking is colour coded and a near miss could be read as a different service.
Lead and xylene free
Matters on sites with a restricted substances policy and where marking happens in enclosed spaces.
Overview
Marking that has to be read, not just seen
Setting out and survey marking is writing, not drawing. A chainage, a depth, an arrow showing which way a service runs - all of it has to be legible to whoever turns up next with a digger. That is what the narrow spray pattern is for, and it is the single thing that separates a survey spray from the cheaper general marking cans. The inverted cap is the other: on a job where you are putting down a hundred marks, not crouching for each one is the difference between an afternoon and a day.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from site marker or line marker paint?
How is this different from site marker or line marker paint?
The spray pattern. Survey spray is narrow, for writing characters, arrows and dimensions that need to be read. Site marker and line marker have a wider pattern for lines and areas. If you are annotating the ground, use this. If you are drawing lines and bays, use those.
What does spray-through cap mean?
What does spray-through cap mean?
The can is designed to be used upside down, with the spray coming out through the cap. That is how you mark the ground at your feet without crouching over every mark.
What RAL is it?
What RAL is it?
RAL 5015, sky blue.
What surfaces will it mark?
What surfaces will it mark?
Concrete, tarmac, wood and composites. The surface needs to be dry and reasonably clean when you spray it.
How long will the mark last?
How long will the mark last?
It is semi-permanent, so months rather than weeks depending on the surface, the traffic and the weather. That is usually right for setting out and survey work, where the mark needs to survive the job but not outlive it.
Will it fit a line marking applicator?
Will it fit a line marking applicator?
It is a 750ml can, so it physically fits the applicators in this range. In practice survey spray is used by hand, because the narrow pattern is there for writing rather than for running lines from a trolley.
