Narrow spray for writing
A tight spray pattern is what lets you put readable characters, arrows and dimensions on the ground instead of a fat unreadable line.

There is a gap between yellow and red on a site. Yellow is everywhere and gets tuned out; red means stop and should be kept for when it does. Orange sits in between - as visible as red, but without the instruction attached, which is why it tends to get used for temporary works, marks that need attention rather than action, and anywhere a scheme has already spent its other colours on services.

The spray pattern. Survey spray is narrow, for writing characters, arrows and dimensions that need to be read. Site marker and line marker have a wider pattern for lines and areas. If you are annotating the ground, use this. If you are drawing lines and bays, use those.

The can is designed to be used upside down, with the spray coming out through the cap. That is how you mark the ground at your feet without crouching over every mark.
