Why the long rectangle

1050 x 450mm exists to carry a short message that has to be read early, from a moving vehicle, at a distance. The width gives the legend the length it needs while the shallow height keeps the sign low enough to stand safely on a verge in wind. SLOW, RAMP and the diverted traffic legends are the classic uses.

Where a triangle warns of a hazard, this format instructs: it tells a driver to do something, or tells them where to go.

Signing a diversion route properly

The diverted traffic signs to diagram 2703 come as left, right, forward and a reversible version. A diversion fails when it is signed at the closure and nowhere else, because a driver who misses one turn has no way back onto the route.

Sign the whole route, not just the start. That means a sign at every junction along the diversion, including the ones where the route carries straight on, and a final sign where the diversion rejoins the original road. The forward sign is the one most often left out of an order and the one that most often gets a driver lost.

Buying the reversible arrow version lets one sign cover a left or right turn, which matters when the same diversion is run in both directions.

SLOW and RAMP

SLOW carries a red border on a white face and is placed on the approach to works, a site entrance or any stretch where traffic needs to come down before it arrives. RAMP warns of a change in the road surface, whether that is a temporary ramp over a trench, a plated excavation or a speed ramp.

Both are placed far enough back that a driver can act on them. A sign read at the hazard is a sign that arrived too late.

The frame and holding it down

The A-frame is moulded in the UK from fully recycled polypropylene, folds flat for stacking, and stands on a built-in retractable stand. At this size the sign weighs around 6.3kg, still a one-person lift, but the extra width catches more wind than a triangle does, so ballast matters more here than anywhere else in the range. The recycled PVC ballast weight fits the whole Q-sign range and traditional A-frames alike.
