Dry coring, and what it is for
These are dry core drills: they cut without a water feed, which is what makes them practical indoors, on finished floors, up a ladder and anywhere a slurry mess is unacceptable.
They suit brick, block, light concrete and masonry for services work: cable entries, extractor ducts, soil pipes, flue liners and boiler penetrations. For dense structural or heavily reinforced concrete, wet coring cuts faster and the bit survives longer.
The limit is heat. Without water, the only cooling is airflow, so a dry bit needs to be backed off regularly rather than leaned on.
Slotted or solid barrel
Slotted barrels have cut-outs along the tube. Air moves through them and dust clears more easily, so the bit runs cooler and faster in brick and block.
Solid barrels have no slots, which makes them stiffer and less inclined to wander. Better where the hole has to finish exactly where it was marked, or where a slot would catch on reinforcement.
For most services work, slotted is the default. Keep a solid one for accuracy work.
Kits against individual bits
The kits here carry a spread of common diameters with the adaptor, the pilot drill and the case in one purchase, and they work out cheaper than assembling the same items separately.
The diameters are the ones that come up repeatedly: small sizes for cable and pipe entries, larger for flues and ducting. For a van that meets whatever is behind the next door, a kit is the sensible starting point and individual bits fill the gaps afterwards.
Dust, and the part people skip
Dry coring into masonry and concrete produces respirable crystalline silica. That is a health control issue, not a housekeeping one, and it is why a dust management kit and an extraction swivel exist in this range.
On-tool extraction captures the dust at the hole rather than after it is in the air. Where extraction is not practical, respiratory protection and a properly worked-out exclusion area are the fallback, not an optional extra.
