On a gondola run the upright ends sit at eye level, and a capped end reads as a finished fitting rather than a cut section.
Comes off again
Push fit rather than glued, so an upright can be shortened or re-used and the cap moved with it.

The bit that finishes the upright
An upright leaves the factory as a cut steel section, and the cut end is what a customer sees at the top of a bay. The cap pushes into that end and covers it. Internal ribs hold it in place without adhesive, so it goes on by hand and comes off again if the upright is ever cut down or moved.
