A bookend that cannot be pushed along
An ordinary bookend works by weight and friction, so the moment a shelf gets busy it ends up shoved to the back with the books leaning anyway. This one is fixed to the upright at two points instead of standing on the shelf. It holds against the load rather than sliding away from it, and when the shelf needs re-spacing it unclips and goes back in at a different height.

No. It needs the slots in the upright to clip into, so it will not work on a fixed or free-standing unit.
