Why bother fixing the shelf down
Stops the shelf lifting
Pulling stock off the front edge of an unfixed shelf can tip it off the brackets. Two screws a bracket takes that away.
Right length for the job
At 20mm they hold in the shelf without the point coming up through the walking surface.

Twin slot brackets are pre-drilled in the top face, so no marking out and no pilot holes in the steel.

The step most people skip
A shelf sitting loose on a pair of brackets works right up until somebody drags a heavy box off the front of it and tips the whole thing. The brackets already have holes drilled in the top face for a screw, so fixing the shelf down takes about ten seconds a bracket and removes the problem. These are sized for that job: 20mm, long enough to hold in the shelf and short enough not to break through the top surface.

Most people use two per bracket. A shelf on three brackets takes six, so a pack of ten covers one long shelf or two short ones.

Not on a standard shelf board. They are 20mm long and part of that is taken up by the thickness of the bracket, so there is very little left to travel. On a thin shelf under about 15mm, check before you drive them.

Not in the bracket, that hole is already there. In a hardwood shelf a small pilot hole in the underside makes it easier and stops the timber splitting.
